5 out of 5 stars excellent and inexpensive, a complete rotary toolset   August 27, 2007

Excellent, and amazing bang for the buck. For less than thirty bucks you are getting a complete rotary toolset, with an assortment of bits, a c-clamp to clamp the rotary tool to the desk, a flexible extension shaft, everything in one box. Everything fits securely in the box and doesnt rattle around or fall out.
You wont find anything less expensive than this for such a complete set. Plus it is speed-adjustable. Changing bits is a snap, no special tools needed.
Quality is excellent. i was astonished at how amazingly quiet the rotary tool is (I had never used one before). Its much, much quieter than an average hand drill. I could use it in a crowded apartment without ever disturbing my neighbors, at any time of day.
This tool from American Science arrived very quickly (within 2 days). The tool rotates very smoothly and without vibration. Its amazingly useful around the house, from cutting to grinding and etching and drilling. You can buy other kinds of bits if you need them, they are fairly inexpensive.
I dont know if regular dremel bits will fit this, but it does come with extra collets and I have been able to put regular drill bits into it.
The speed is adjustable and you'll rarely need to go above the second setting. For cutting they recommend low speed settings; for grinding, high speed.
The trick with any rotary tool seems to be to use the speed rather than force, to let the speed do the work and to not rush it. Even for cutting, its best not to put pressure on the bit, but to just let the speed do its work. This rotary tool cut through a wood desk (i was cutting a hole to let cords through) like it was butter. I barely had to put any pressure on it. Of course its not as powerful as a regular router, but it does work and it is far more versatile and inexpensive than a real router!
Best to wear protective goggles (saw dust does fly around a little bit) and a nose mask.
Now that I have a quality and inexpensive router, I honestly dont know how I survived all these years without one in the house.
